The Setting of Great Expectations

Dickens based Pip's childhood in Kent, on the marshes. Many of the landmarks in the book are based on real-life locations in Rochester,Kent, where Dickens spent five years of his childhood. Rob Joyce, who plays Pip in our production, was born and raised in Rochester. Rob's Kentish roots have helped him and the rest of the cast with their Estuary accents, to add to the authenticity of the production. Mr and Mrs Joyce (Rob's parents) have kindly taken photos of the significant landmarks of the story, to give an insight into Dickens inspiration for the novel.

Satis (Restoration) House

These photos show the imposing building on which Dickens based Satis House, where Pip paid many visits to see Miss Havisham and Estella. Interestingly, there is a house in Rochester called Satis House (which means "enough" in Latin), but this house is called Restoration House. It seems he took the name of one house and the image of another.

Kent Marshes

The bleak expanse of Kent marshland is the setting of much of the book. The novel was obviously written in poorer weather than this photo was taken - as they are not very misty marshes!

The Old Forge

The side of the Old Forge, which if you look carefully has Joe Gargery's name on the house sign.

Graveyard

The graveyard where orphan Pip's parents were buried in Great Expectations. This is where he is first terrified by the escaped convict
