Review of D’Artagnan’s Daughter
By Vicki Civil from the Sheffield Star
A fast-moving and swashbuckling comedy is currently showing at the University drama studio, courtesy of The Company.
D’Artagnan’s Daughter has everything from old musketeers, fencing nuns and pirates that don’t like murder!
With a strong female presence in the cast, as it is based around a frustrated musketeer’s daughter, it’s a pleasant change from the more common male perspective on this type of storyline.
D’Artagnan’s daughter is the final part to a trilogy written and directed by Alison Munro, who starred in the opening night’s performance due to unexpected absence from a member of the cast.
Despite this absence, The Company achieved a performance to a highly professional standard. Although the plot in the first half was sometimes a little hard to follow, it soon picked up for a highly amusing and laugh-out-loud second half.
The play was full of witty one liners and amazing fight scenes. At one point 23 people are on stage with swords and were beautifully choreographed.
Rob Joyce who plays the Chevalier de Gite is definitely one to watch. He delivers his lines well and creates a lot of the humour along with Laura McDonnell who plays Constance and Sarah Chadwick who plays the Duchesse D’Orleans.
D’Artagnan’s daughter is a highly enjoyable performance and a great way to spend an evening.
